It's like a painting. You have an artistic urge and you throw some paint against the wall in rage, passion or confusion. Then you stand back and look at what came out of it. Then somebody comes along and calls it genius. The next person says it's crap. And the next person doesn't even want to look at it. All the while the painter is just sitting back looking at this mess he created going, 'What the fuck did I make this for in the first place? I can't even remember.'

I think that if you're making a film that has a point or message to it that you should make the best story you can come to life. Be honest. If it's for entertainment, make it campy, make it funny, make it exciting, make it dramatic. But I don't think it's right to take real life tragedies and make a joke out of them while still trying to pull off a serious film. It's a very contradicting thing to do, and that is the only thing I have a problem with. Otherwise fuck responsibility! You're expressing yourself. - Interview in Sex Gore Mutants when asked, 'As a filmmaker, what do you feel is your moral responsibility?'

I wanted to see if I could make a scene, actually make an entire movie, feel disturbing and violent, without ever showing a single drop of blood. - Interview in Sex Gore Mutants

People are meant to die in horror films, I know that, and there's nothing wrong with that. But I still wanted to question peoples fascination with that. - Interview in Sex Gore Mutants in response to his film Amateur Porn Star Killer (2006)
At the age of fourteen an older teen put a 9mm pistol to Ryan's head and asked Ryan if he thought the gun was loaded before pulling the trigger. The gun was loaded but jammed.

Began self abusing at the age of thirteen. He has been open about it in interviews and states this as a major reason for deciding to make the Alyssa Bustamante-inspired film My Name Is 'A' by Anonymous (2012).

When Ryan was sixteen he and a friend made a bad joke after school and were arrested, taken to jail, and questioned for several hours by police. Ryan spent a year going to court when the charges were severely bumped up to an actual crime (which had never even occurred); he was threatened with being sent to juvenile hall and/or foster care but fought it and was eventually sentenced to two years of probation, plus therapy, and community service. He fell so far behind in school that he had to take night school classes as well as after school ROP classes (one of which was a law enforcement class taught by his arresting officer) in order to receive enough credits to graduate high school.

Was in five major car accidents before his 21th birthday. In the first accident he suffered a mild head wound. In the second accident his mother and grandmother were nearly killed, both receiving life-threatening wounds to their heads, Ryan received injuries to his ribs. This accident was the first in a series of unfortunate events which landed the then five year old Ryan, and his one year old brother, Jeremy, in foster care. Ryan eventually returned home after a couple of years but Jeremy remained with his second foster family until he was eighteen years old. Ryan received another head wound in another car accident when he was in middle school. When he was nineteen he let his unlicensed girlfriend drive her mother's car; they got down the street before she made an illegal turn in front of an SUV, totaling the car. They switched seats and initially told the cops that Ryan was driving but were turned in by the mother when she found out. They both had to go to court and were lucky enough to land a lenient judge.

His mother, who has been blind since birth, was a favorite in the Los Angeles Papers in the late 70s and early 80s due to her ability to perform Horse Vaulting, Skiing, Karate and much more, without her site. Shane followed in her athletic footsteps for awhile, even becoming a physical trainer for a short time, but couldn't keep away from movies.
