Rusty Cundieff Career

Cundieff did stand-up comedy in Los Angeles after graduating from USC in 1982 while hunting for acting roles. In 1985, he landed his first major job as Theo Carver on Days of Our Lives for a year. He starred as Big Brother Chucky in Spike Lee’s School Daze in 1988.

Cundieff was inspired by his experience working on the film with Lee to explore writing and directing as well as acting, and at the age of 29, he wrote, directed, and starred in the highly-received 1993 rap satire Fear of a Black Hat. Tales from the Hood, a horror anthology released in 1995, was directed and co-written by him.

He directed sequels, Tales from the Hood 2 and Tales from the Hood 3, in 2018 and 2020, which he said he had been attempting to film for 20 years, but that the success of Get Out had opened the door for.

In the mid-1990s, Cundieff was also a correspondent on Michael Moore’s comedic TV magazine show TV Nation. In 2013, he and 12 other people were nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Director for their work on a section in the anthology comedy film Movie 43.
